
Gifted and Talented Endorsement
Endorsement programs in gifted and talented education are offered as part of the general requirement for master's degrees in the Ellen Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services. A minimum of 16 hours is required to meet the Gifted and Talented Endorsement guidelines of the Utah State Office of Education. The endorsement is added to basic state certifications.
Availability
This program is available at the Salt Lake Education Center via the following Instruction Type(s):
Courses are taught in a traditional setting with the professor and students participating together in the same classroom. Students meet at a designated time and place.
Admissions
While there is no application for the Gifted & Talented endorsement program, students must apply early in the program to the School of Graduate Studies in order to count the coursework toward a Master’s of Education degree. This is important since you are only able to apply 12 non-matriculated credits toward your degree.
Application materials can be found at www.usu.edu/graduateschool/apply. Minimum requirements for admission include:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Score at or above 40th percentile on appropriate admissions test
- Three letters of recommendation
- Completed application and fee
- Official transcript of all college/univeristy coursework
Requirements
The minimum requirements for a Gifted & Talented endorsement are an educator license, teaching experience, and a minimum of 16 credit hours of approved university courses.

The program is available for individuals currently teaching in Utah’s schools and participants must meet requirements established by their districts. Contact the Gifted & Talented Coordinator in your district for information about your district’s participation in the endorsement program.

The Emma Eccles Jones College of Education & Human Services, in cooperation with the Utah State Office of Education, offers the Gifted & Talented endorsement at a reduced cost to educators. The courses for the endorsement can also be applied toward graduate degrees.

Also required are five credits toward improvement of curriculum and instruction in content areas. Work with advisor to meet these requirements.
